BACKGROUND CHECK ORDINANCE

 ALERT to ALL MYAA Coaches,

Instructors, Trainers and Volunteers

Immediate Action Required to Comply with Medford Township Background Check Ordinance

The Medford Township Council has adopted an ordinance requiring "Volunteers" for "Youth Organizations" to obtain a criminal history record background check.  Under the Ordinance, a "Volunteer" is "[a]ny adult individual of the age of 18 years or older who volunteers his time and acts as a coach, leader, instructor, trainer or the like for a Youth Organization."  MYAA is one such Youth Organization.

The Medford Township Recreation Department has obtained a grant, valued at close to $30,000, from the Megan Nicole Kanka Foundation, to pay nearly all of the costs of the initial round of  background checks in 2009.  After 2009, all further expenses (less $2 per Volunteer) will be paid by MYAA out of the fees it charges participants and not by the individual volunteers.

If you are a "Volunteer" under the Ordinance, you must do the following ASAP:

1. Pick up application forms at the Recreation Department on the 2nd floor of the Municipal Building at 17 North Main Street.

2. Complete the form and take it to an office of Sagem Morpho, Inc., the agency that has contracted with the NJ State Police to facilitate the background checks.  The closest Sagem Morpho offices are located at the Heritage Executive Complex at 1873 Route 70 East, Suite 126 in Cherry Hill, NJ and at the Parkway Corp. Center at 1230 Parkway Avenue, Suite 102 in Ewing, NJ.  Sagem Morpho also has hours two Fridays per month at Ancora Hospital, and has other offices in every County in the State.  You can contact the Recreation Department for these other locations.  Your application will be processed and you will be fingerprinted at this office.  YOU MUST OBTAIN A RECEIPT AT THE OFFICE.

3. Bring or mail your receipt to the Recreation Department, 17 North Main Street, Medford, NJ 08055.  YOU MUST DO THIS FOR THE COSTS OF YOUR BACKGROUND CHECK TO BE PAID BY THE KANKA FOUNDATION.  When you furnish your receipt to the Township, you will be issued an identification card which must be in your possession whenever you are participating in any MYAA activities.  You will be charged a $2 fee by the Recreation Department to defray the costs of processing the card.

4. The results of the background check will be submitted to the Review Committee.  You will be notified only if you fail and, if so, you will have a right to appeal.  If you do not appeal or if your appeal is denied, you will be required to surrender your identification card.

All inquiries should be directed to the Recreation Department at 609-654-2512.   Click here to contact the Recreation Department by email.
